Parent/Teacher Conference
Come join us for our Parent Technology Workshop on Monday, September 25 at 10 am or 5 pm at Blenheim Middle School of Discovery.
Today we took our math lesson outside!! A look at the standards revealed I needed to teach parallel lines, transversals, and angles formed by them (8GM1). My first thoughts were, “How can I teach this standard so that the kids can move and get out of the classroom”? The answer came quickly: “Go to the parking lot”.
So, I rolled my whiteboard and supply cart out to the school’s parking lot, and the rest, as they say, is history. We talked about the parking lines and the kids discovered that these were parallel lines and that no matter how far they “carried” the two lines, they would never intersect, and they were equally distanced from each other. In addition, we added a transversal, and the kids discovered the transversal cut the parallel lines and resulted in 8 angles.
The lesson ended with all of us, me included, using sidewalk chalk to write about the lesson. Now everyone who parks in the BMSD can see how much fun learning can be when you get out and move!

What is multimodal learning?
Multimodal learning suggests that when a number of our senses – visual, auditory, kinesthetic – are engaged during learning, we understand and remember more. By combining these modes, learners experience learning in a variety of ways to create a diverse learning style.
I call it live Math! Kids are being instructed outside the classroom – they’re engaged, they’re excited and they are learning!
Ms. Cue’s math class is learning how to translate percentages into decimals and decimals into percentages.
Students from this class took a paper and pencil test yesterday. Three of the 8 students did not pass the test. However, when we played the game a few times those students took the test again and they passed – proof that multimodal learning works.
