BMSD Student Council

Student Council promotes and provides leadership development opportunities to prepare and empower student leaders to serve their schools and communities.

The BMSD Student Council Sponsor is Ms. Jacobs.

How to become a member of Student Council:

The students in each homeroom nominates 1 individual who they believe, in agreeance with the individual, demonstrates leadership qualities, follows school rules, exhibits beyond acceptable behavior, and also meets the following criteria:

  • Maintain a B overall average and failing no classes. This includes exploratory classes.

  • Cannot have any more than one disciplinary warning or referral per year.

  • Must also submit the required Candidacy Eligibility Form that includes three teacher recommendations

Advisory positons are a part of Student Council as well:

President (8th grader)

President sets the agenda for all Student Council activities with the assistance of the Board of Sponsors. By setting the agenda their responsibilities involves , but not limited to keeping the council on task, creating goals, executing and developing activities, delegating responsibilities, leading morning meetings, leading team building activities, planning logistics for events and coordinating with the high school government. The President should have excellent communication and leadership skill

Vice President (7th or 8th grader)

Vice President will help carry out the agenda set forth by the President and the Board of Sponsors. The responsibilities are not limited to executing and developing activities, leading morning meetings, leading morning meetings, leading team building activities, and planning logistics for events. In the event the President is not present or unable to fulfill his/her duties, the Vice President will assume the role of the President. The Vice President should have excellent communication and leadership skills.

Secretary (6th or 7th grader)

Keeping the minutes during Council meeting, helping execute and developing activities, leading team building activities, and planning logistics for events. In the event the President or Vice President is not present or unable to fulfill his/her duties, the secretary/reporter will assume the role of the President. The secretary/reporter must have good organizational and communication skills.

Treasurer (6th or 7th grader)

The Treasurer is responsible for collecting, budgeting money and keeping accurate accounting logs during activities. The Treasure will also give a financial report at every meeting. The Treasure should be good in math and logistical skills

When will we vote:

Friday morning, September 3rd, during homeroom, students will select 1 Student Council nominee. Teachers will submit those names to Ms. Jacobs no later than 12:00. Failure to submit the nominee’s names will result in your homeroom NOT being represented.

**Students, you do not have to accept the nomination if you don’t want to participate. If you do accept the nomination, please be sure you meet the requirements. If you fail to meet the requirements, Ms. Jacobs will not accept your nomination. Because this is the beginning of the year, I will review and consider last year’s discipline and grades. Final determination will come from administration.

All nominees must get an application packet from Ms. Jacobs and submit it no later than Thursday, September 9. If any nominee is interested in running for office, please let Ms. Jacobs know.

Student Council member may sign up for a club, however, if we meet on a club day, you will not report to your club meeting. Instead, you will meet in our designated meeting location.
